Facial implants

Targeting Cosmetic Concerns

Facial implants may be placed in the chin, cheeks, or jaw to make cosmetic improvements in the face.

Facial implants can do wonders for a patient’s cosmetic concerns. Whether this is the placement of an implant for mid face wholeness, lateral jaw implant for patients with a very narrow face, or a chin or chin/prejowl implant for weak chin projection, a facial implant could be more effective than dermal fillers.

The Goal of Facial Implants

The goal of a facial implant is to minimize or reverse signs of aging or to augment specific areas of the facial bone structure.
Areas that need minimal volumization can often be treated with facial fillers, like Juvederm, Restylane, and Dysport. This can include making small adjustments to the nose, midface, cheeks, and jawline.
The goal of facial implants is to add volume to address visible deficit and restore balance between the treated area and the rest of the face.
In contrast to fillers, facial implants are permanent and results won’t fade away in six months to two years.

Types of Implants

During a chin implant procedure, a small, inconspicuous incision roughly 2.5cm long is made horizontally directly beneath and behind the chin. This allows the surgeon to lift the skin off the underlying front part of the lower jawbone and place the implant directly over the bone. The implant is then attached with a single suture.

Because the implant is placed into a tight tissue pocket, it doesn’t move or slide after placement. The surgeon will finish the procedure by closing the overlying skin.

At Form MD Plastic Surgery, we utilize silicon or Gore-tex implants because they are well tolerated and easy to remove if necessary.
The surgeon will make one small incision inside the mouth along the gum line on either side of the cheek and lift the tissue overlying the cheekbone, right below the most prominent part of the cheek (malar eminence). The implant will then be placed directly on the bone and attached using a single, tiny screw that is covered completely by the implant. The surgeon will place implants on both sides, carefully ensuring symmetry, and close the small incisions with dissolvable sutures.

To place a jaw implant, the surgeon will make one incision for each side. The incision will be placed on the bottom jaw next to the gum line. This allows the surgeon to lift the tissue on top of the bone down towards the corner of the mandible. Once the bone is completely exposed, the implant will be placed directly on top of the bone and attached with a single, very small screw. The surgeon will then re-drape the overlying tissue over the implant and close the two small incisions with dissolvable sutures.
